If you have little kids, you know that outdoor toys can be hit or miss.
Some get played with once and then sit in the garage all summer. Others somehow end up being used every single day.
These are the outdoor toys that actually earned a permanent spot in our backyard. They kept our kids busy, encouraged active play, and got them outside without needing a screen.

If I could only pick one outdoor toy for toddlers and preschoolers, it would probably be a water table.
Kids can scoop, pour, splash, float toys, wash rocks, and somehow stay entertained far longer than seems possible.
What surprises me most is that even my 10-year-old still ends up joining in sometimes. He’ll start by “helping” his younger sibling and then suddenly he’s building dams, floating toys, or inventing some elaborate water challenge.
It’s one of those rare toys that stays relevant longer than you’d expect.
Balance Bike
A balance bike is one of the best purchases we ever made for outdoor play.
Both of my kids spent time on a balance bike before moving to a regular bicycle, and when it was time to switch, neither needed training wheels. The learning curve was surprisingly small because they had already figured out the balancing part.
It’s also one of the few outdoor toys that gets used almost daily once kids gain confidence riding it.
Sidewalk Chalk
Sidewalk chalk is one of those simple activities that never seems to get old.
We’ve tried a few different brands over the years, and I keep coming back to the Crayola chalk. The colors are brighter, it writes more smoothly, and it lasts longer than most of the cheaper options we’ve picked up elsewhere.
Our driveway has become everything from a race track to a giant game board depending on the day.
Sand Table
A sand table creates all the fun of a sandbox without taking over your entire yard.
Kids can dig, scoop, build roads, bury treasures, and create endless imaginary worlds. It also works well for sensory play and is much easier to supervise than a large sandbox.
This is one of those toys that quietly keeps kids occupied for long stretches of time.
Reusable Water Balloons
Traditional water balloons are fun.
Cleaning up hundreds of tiny balloon pieces afterward? Not so much.
Reusable water balloons give you all the fun without the mess. Kids can refill them in seconds and keep playing without adults constantly tying balloons or picking up scraps around the yard.
These have become a summer favorite in our house.
Splash Pad
A splash pad is basically the easiest way to create a mini water park in your backyard.
It’s especially great for younger kids who are too small for deeper pools but still want to run, splash, and cool off on hot days.
On really warm afternoons, this gets far more use than many of our larger outdoor toys.
Bubble Lawn Mower
There is something magical about bubbles and little kids.
The bubble lawn mower combines two things preschoolers love: pushing things around and chasing bubbles.
It’s easy, active, and usually guarantees lots of running, laughing, and excitement. Plus, unlike some outdoor toys, it doesn’t require any setup from parents.
Kids Gardening Set
My kids love anything that lets them do what the adults are doing.
A small gardening set gives them their own tools for digging, planting, watering, and helping around the yard. Sometimes they’re actually gardening. Sometimes they’re just moving dirt from one spot to another.
Either way, they’re outside, busy, and having fun—which is a win in my book.
Outdoor toys don’t need to be complicated to be fun.
The toys that get the most use in our house are usually the simplest ones—the ones that encourage movement, imagination, water play, and open-ended fun.
